Mr. David Armitage lecture at ESU

On Thursday, Feb. 4, Dr. Eliasson from the political science department brought in David Armitage, senior Europe specialist and head of European Regional Analysis at the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR).  He has a Ph.D. in government and politics from the University of Maryland. From 2001-2007, he was the principal European Union analyst in INR, and from 2007 to 2008, he served as the State/INR representative on the President’s Daily Briefing Staff.

The presentation was located in the Abeloff Building from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. The topic of his lecture was “American-European Relations Amidst Rapid Changes and New Treaties.” The lecture was open to the public and free. The format for the lecture was the presentation, which lasted for about an hour, and after, there was time for questions and answers.
Mr. Armitage presented his topic clearly, concisely, and logically. He included personal experiences and thoughts in both the presentation and during the question and answers part. The questions from the audience posed good questions on topics like: Turkey, sovereignty, NATO in relation to the EU, and the Ukraine. The answers to each of these diverse topics were met with intelligent, clear answers from Mr. Armitage.
