What is it about the Olympics that seems to bring every American sports enthusiast and even non-enthusiasts together these past couple weeks?
If you aren’t living in a hole, you should know the Winter Olympics are occurring in Vancouver right now. The question is, why the Olympics are so popular.
Is it the competitive nature that every one of us is born with? While channel surfing, I can’t help but stop on the Olympic Games, even curling, although I have no clue what the rules are.
I’d like to say it doesn’t really bother me when Americans don’t make the cut when it comes to winning the gold, but I admit I feel that little bit of remorse for the person who couldn’t make the jump as far as the Canadian before him.
However, the sight of the American with tears in his eyes after he receives his medal does put a smile on my face.
I guess it is just me supporting my fellow American. Props to them keep up the good work.
The funny thing is as I rant on about the love we have for our fellow Americans during the Olympics, I know that there are still those few people that would rather vote for their favorite singer on “American Idol.”
As the Olympics figure skating, snowboarding, and speed skating were covered by NBC, they couldn’t compete with Fox’s two hour installment of “American Idol” as their first semifinalists were revealed.
Americans would rather support Ellen DeGeneres and their favorite wannabe country singer than their sports players representing their country. Isn’t that funny?
I guess it is fair to say, not every American is into the sports scene. We can’t expect everyone to watch the Winter Olympics.
I think it is just their opinions on what makes them happy that influences their decicsions as to what they are going to watch when they have an hour out of their day to relax. If American Idol causes you to relax and unwind go right ahead and enjoy the beautiful (and not so beautiful voices) of the American singers.
If it’s watching Apolo Ohno or the American hockey team defeat Canada that sparks your interest, then enjoy.
The Olympic Games are something for all Americans to be proud of even if it’s not your cup of tea. Let’s all enjoy our fellow Americans accomplish their life goals and support our country.
