First built in 1928, The Sherman Theater has been a staple of downtown Stroudsburg ever since its opening. Its doors first opened on Monday, January 7, 1929 with daily performances of live entertainment as well as movies. While business boomed for many years, the theater, like many other of its kind, began to struggle. Yet while the theater has seen its share of hard times, including closing its doors in December of 1983, damaging fires, thefts, and controversy, it couldn’t stay down for long. Now under new ownership and with the overwhelming help of community and individual support, the Sherman Theater is back and better than ever. While the non-profit theater has seen drastic changes and improvements, making it capable of accommodating some of the nation’s largest acts and seat over 1,000 people, there is an endless list of repairs and projects needed in order to keep this historical landmark running for years to come.
This is where the Capital 30 Campaign comes into play. The campaign asks area residents and Sherman patrons from all over to contribute at least $30 towards the finalization of the buildings renovation and expansion. Funds are used to restore and improve the local landmark, such as the beautiful new façade that lights up the streets of Stroudsburg on show nights, improved and highly functional box office that help to better serve its customers, and the theaters upcoming new seat installation which will increase the seating capacity tremendously.“If every person in Monroe County were to give $30 to this project, we would reach our goal of creating a debt-free performing arts center for the region and community,” said Richard Berkowitz, Executive Director of the Sherman Theater. “We are already well on our way to success, having received funding from both private and public grants and donations. Now we are asking for the community’s support.” With over 90,000 people visiting the Sherman since its rebirth, it’s no question that the theater has become an integral part of the town. The theater has opened its doors to be rented for public events, hosts concert for East Stroudsburg University, and has put on numerous festivals for members of the community such as the popular Pocono Raceway and Stroudfest. With such incredible acts such as Sean Kingston, Mike Gordon, Train and many more to come, it’s no doubt that the Sherman Theater has come a long way, and with help from the community, patrons of East Stroudsburg will see its improvements for years to come.
