Terrance King has earned his fifth PSAC East Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week Award. King hails from East Stroudsburg North High School and has greatly helped the Warriors’ averaging 8.3 points and 9.0 rebounds this season.
Other note-worthy games were against Cheney where King scored 11 points and 13 rebounds to help regain a share of the PSAC East lead and win 63-55 in overtime. King also scored seven points and eight rebounds against Kutztown and six points and eight rebounds against Mansfield.
King leads all PSAC freshmen in scoring with an 8.8 points per game, in field goal percentage with 54.4 and blocked shots nearing 1.4 per game. In East Stroudsburg University men’s basketball standings he is the third leading scorer and rebounder and has started 23 out of the 25 games played so far in the 2009-2010 season.
Other honorable mentions that have also received this award this season are Duane Johnson with three mentions and Marcus Brown with the last two weeks. Brown, Johnson and King have all taken on more minutes and will be key players in upcoming games. Brown has scored 10 points in four of the last five games and had eight points, all in the first half, of the first meeting with the Wolves last month. King is averaging 7.0 points and 6.3 rebounds in the last four contests and Johnson has continued to emerge as one of ESU’s top perimeter defenders, especially late in games. Combined they have earned a total of 10 out of the 14 freshman of the week awards.
ESU men’s basketball has done well this season with an 8-4 track record. ESU’s victory, combined with Mansfield ’s 53-50 win over West Chester and Kutztown’s 87-83 loss at Shippensburg, creates a three-way tie for first place in the PSAC East with two games remaining.
ESU, Cheyney and Mansfield are all 8-4, with Kutztown a game back at 7-5 and Bloomsburg returning to the playoff picture at 6-6. ESU is ranked No. 17 in Division II and fourth in the Atlantic Region. The top four teams will make the conference playoffs, with the first and second seeds earning home games in the first round.
In addition, ESU honored 36 members of both men’s and women’s basketball team in reaching the 1,000th point mark with 23 from the men’s team and 13 from the women’s team. Jonathan Roberts is the all-time leading scorer on the men’s side with 2,218 points in his career from 1986-90. A three-time All-American and PSAC East Player of the Year, Roberts is the only player in school history to have his number (33) retired in the rafters at Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Warrior’s play West Chester this Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010 at 4 p.m to fight for a conference spot.
